Paulie didn’t think she’d ever seen Swanny in such an exuberant state. And that was saying something.

So far, he’d quoted Shakespeare seven times, performed over-zealous impressions of Captain Hook, Jack Sparrow and (weirdly) Taylor Swift, grabbed a large, golden vase from the props box to mime accepting an Oscar and now he was draping himself in swathes of striped fabric bound by his very own skull and cutlass belt buckle, asking if he would pass for a buxom wench. All of this with the entire drama class’s camera phones trained right on him with a special request to, “Immediately spread the fantastical news on your social thingamabobs.”

With an immense stroke of luck, the daily BeYu notification came in around the time Swanny gave this instruction so there was an almost melodic burst of chimes, pops and whooshes. Paulie could hardly blame him for being excited. He’d told them repeatedly of his years of dedication to writing ‘For the Love of Pirates’, how he’d had countless meetings in London and how it had come so close so many times. “But it’s never come this close my little thespian fledglings. It’s so painfully close now I can actually smell it. Can’t you? Come on, breathe deep my darlings. Fill those lungs. Success is in the air!”

Everybody did as they were told, or at least pretended to. And because Swanny awaited their reaction with the expression of a three year old waiting for a lollipop, they all agreed they could, indeed, smell the scent of success. This is madness, Paulie thought, and nudged Wren for a reaction. She got it. Well, she got a small smile, at least.

“So, Swanny,” Rashid asked, “how come our disaster of a performance didn’t put the movie producers off?” Everybody’s eyes flicked towards Sage who, after a miniscule twitch of his mouth, kept his head held high. “After the human pyramid fell apart, we thought it was game over.”

A shriek of laughter escaped Swanny’s smacking mouth. “Because, my dearest boy, it takes more than a little tumble to put powerful people like this off. They know a profitable cinematic opportunity when they see it. And see it they did! They saw it in the streets of Berryport. They saw it in the glistening waves of the sea, the panoramic skies across Torbay, the charming cobbles of the harbour. They saw it in each and every one of you and they see it in my script. Finally!”

“What happens next, Swanny?” Shazza was teetering on the edge of her seat like she was ready to run a marathon. Only Cazza matched her in quietly tethered eagerness.

“Well, no doubt I will be needed in London over the coming weeks to secure the deal. But I can tell you whispers of something that I heard, if you promise that you will keep it between these four, heavily curtained walls?” Everybody instantly agreed and leaned further forwards on their chairs, if that was even possible. “Now that sufficient time has passed since our terrible tragedy, the producers are keen to film some crowd scenes during Berryport Pirate Festival.
